Retreatment (repeat root canal treatment) refers to re-treatment of a tooth where a previous root canal treatment has failed or where re-infection or other problems have occurred.
The first root canal treatment is usually done to clean the infection from the inside of the tooth and fill the tooth. However, sometimes this may not be enough, and if the infection recurs or other problems arise, root canal treatment may be required again.
After unsuccessful or incomplete root canal treatments, there are intra-osseous inflammations, which we define as lesions at the root tip.
Repeat root canal treatment is usually required in the following cases:
The first root canal treatment was unsuccessful: The first root canal treatment procedure may be unsuccessful if the infection is not completely cleaned or the canal inside the tooth is not completely filled.
When a new infection develops: A new infection may develop in the tooth, in which case another root canal treatment may be necessary.
When a new problem develops in the tooth: For example, the tooth may develop cracks after root canal treatment or the filling material may become stuck, which may require a repeat root canal treatment.
Repeat root canal treatment is important to maintain the health and structure of the tooth. Successful repeat root canal treatment increases the likelihood of healing
During the procedure, the tooth may experience an acute exacerbation process, which I call flare up.
